In this unit, we went over some of the potential problems a new ESL teacher may have in the classroom, such as encouraging students who are reluctant to participate, issues based on classroom size, and what to expect on the first day. On the first day, it's best not to teach directly from the course book, as the teacher may not know the classroom dynamics immediately. The first day is the time to establish rapport between themselves and the students, to assess class and individual needs, and to set the tone and habits for the rest of the year. Classroom size can be a challenge, especially for newer teachers. Classroom control may be more difficult, but group activities and assigning group leaders for specific tasks may make teaching large groups easier. In much smaller classes, there may not be enough people for particular activities, but monitoring individual progress is easier. Getting students to participate when they may be reluctant or shy is also easier with smaller groups, as more attention may be given to the individual. There are methods to encouraging participation, such as student-to-student activities or allowing the student to go home and take their time figuring out what they intend to say and helping them at that time.
