This unit has taught me about the ways of managing classes. The teacher has to vary his/her postion (standing/sitting, in front of the class or otherwise) depending on the activity, and also his/her voice depending on the class and to make the lesson stimulating. Teacher talk time is necessary as a model of correct English, for teaching language points, organising activities, and giving feedback, but student talk time is also important for them to practise what they know and have learnt. Therefore, teachers should reduce unnecessary talking time where possible, through the use of gestures, simple and clear instructions, elicit answers from students, and provide activities and organise class groupings such that there is sufficient student talk time. There are different ideal classroom arrangements depending on the class size, classroom size, type of activity, and personality of students (also taking into account their ages and nationalities). Students can be grouped into various groupings - whole class, as individuals, pairs and groups, which have their respective strengths and weaknesses regarding student talk time, interaction among students, discipline, student personality, and so on.
