When starting a course, the teachers should use the first lesson to establish the rapport, to get to know the students and their interests in L2 and to find out their L2 level. Warmers (for example Hangman, Pictionary, tongue-twisters) are used to motivate students to use L2. Reluctant students can be encouraged to use L2 through role-play activities, pair work, and controlled practice. When teaching a large class work-sheets and pair work can help involve all students, choosing a group leader can help with organization and feedback. Native language should be used only among the students to help each other understand the task (which can be easily avoided by giving clear instructions). The students shouldn't be allowed to use L1 during speaking activity. If faced with the students at different levels a teacher can use different materials for weaker and stronger students or the same materials but different tasks; pair weaker with stronger students or simply choose laissez-faire approach (but make sure that the weaker ones don't get frustrated and the stronger ones don't get bored).
