This unit on pronunciation taught me knowledge I had never studied. Pronunciation is obviously an essential part of a language but actual phonology, or applied phonetics, is new to me. Intonation involves the rise or fall in sentences. Typically, the fall comes at the conclusion of the thought, thus at the end of the sentence. Stress can change the intended meaning of a sentence. Learning where stresses are helps with pronunciation. Writing on the board using underlines on stresses can help as a learning tool in the classroom. Sound joining is another important aspect for learning to speak and understand colloquial speech. I thought the poem on pronunciation was enlightening. I never thought about how many words that are spelled the same or similarly are pronounced completely differently.
