Feedback during a course is as useful for the students as for the teachers. Through tutorials we can follow our students’ progress on a regular basis. We can also ask students to evaluate the course and in that way understand if the lessons’ difficulty is adequate for them and how comfortable are they feeling with the contents.
Finally, we have many different kinds of tests, which can be applied at different stages of a course. Usually, before forming the groups for a course, a placement test will be applied to determine the language level of the students. At the beginning of a course, a diagnostic test can be of great use to understand what the students know or don´t know about the language. Along the course, progress tests will be necessary to understand what our students have learned or have forgotten and what needs to be reviewed. This type of tests can be placed at the end of a term, the middle or end of the year or whenever the teacher will consider it necessary.
External examinations are specific exams applied to evaluate different skills in general, academic or business english. Some of the most known are the TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC or the Cambridge ones like KET, PET, FCI, CAE and CPE. In business, the most common one are BEC and BULATS.
Though sometimes it can be felt as a stressful experience, evaluations and feedback are necessary to understand the students’ learning progress and to improve teaching skills and contents. It doesn’t always need to be a formal test (unless required by the institution), but it is essential to keep track of how our students feel and what needs to be revised or reinforced.
