Being able to effectively carry out the 'engage' portion of the lesson is essential, not only in any individual lesson, but most especially at the very beginning of a teaching relationship with students. In this regard, it is important not only to build a foundation of trust and rapport with students, but such 'warm up/engage' exercises create the basis for the instructor to best gather as much introductory data as possible about individual students (and the class as a whole) concerning their strengths, challenges, level of motivation, work habits, etc. All of this introductory information forms the basis of an instructor's strategy in tackling different challenges that she may encounter throughout teaching the course. Such challenges can be directly related to larger than normal size of the class and corresponding disparities in levels of English competence or other individual challenges that different students may have. Regardless of circumstance, introductory information gathered in the Engage stage of instruction will serve to better allow the instructor to create an optimal strategy to better synergize his teaching efforts (i.e. --- Pairing stronger students with weaker ones, creating effective group activities, etc.
