The grammar terminology once again has me bewildered. I know that to be a good teacher of English it is one of the basic requirements to fully understand the correct grammar of one's own country. I can usually tell if something is not right but explaining why is difficult for me. On reflection I see I need to spend more time on really getting to grips with the Grammar content of the course. Here is one way that I make simplified notes to help e remember the rules: The Conditionals refer to past, present and future possibilities with the five main conditionals being 1 The Zero Conditional taking the form - if/when+present tense, present tense and being used when actions and facts are irrefutable 2 The First Conditional taking the form if+present simple, will - used when talking about a real situation in the future that is possible, probable or even certain 3 The Second Conditional taking the form if+past simple, would/could/might + base form - used when there is a hypothetical situation which is not true nor ever likely to be so. 4 The Third Conditional taking the form if +past perfect, would /could/might + have + past participle - used when talking about a hypothetical past action and it's hypothetical past results 5 Mixed Conditional taking the form if + past perfect, would + base form - used when talking about a hypothetical past with it's hypothetical present day results. NOTES *Students may struggle with the complexity of the structures *Students might find the use of the past simple in the Second Conditional difficult to comprehend because it refers to the future. * Difficulties could arise from the difference in usage between the First and Second Conditionals and the Third and Mixed Conditionals.
