Before a course begins, the teacher must administer a level test and do a needs assessment. In Business English, both of these are typically done at once to make grouping easier and more efficient. Level tests should be graded. Needs analyses should give information about the student's previous learning experiences, English they require in their job, and what they think would be helpful to study. Using the information from both of these parts, the teacher can arrange them into a logical sequence to form their syllabus. Assessment at the end of a course is necessary as a way to measure the efficacy of the program, as well as to allow students to monitor their progress. Sometimes, students need to prepare for specific Business English examinations, in which case the teacher will likely have a specific syllabus to work from. Course evaluations are necessary for helping to evaluate the material, gain insight on any improvements the teacher could make, and to provide information for a report that can be given to your employer.
