Morris, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit, we reviewed the special types of students and classes that an ESL instructor may wind up teaching in their career. Young learners vs more matured learners, Business English students, multilingual classes vs monolingual, etc. Young learners, for example, will need more visuals and pictures and will be more able to retain language than older groups. They may also not have the same inhibitions that older groups have and will be more willing to experiment with the language, whereas older groups may hesitate more due to fear of embarrassment. For learners of Business English, one should expect to find out the specific goals each student has in mind, and what their job requires them to be able to do by the end of the course. From there the teacher can plan out their lessons better in order to help their students achieve these goals. Finally, there are different advantages and disadvantages to teaching a multilingual group vs a monolingual group. In the multilingual group, English may be the only thing the students all have in common, which will force them to use the language out of necessity. They may have different problems with English, though, based on their own mother tongues, so correction will look different for each one. In a monolingual group, it may be difficult to motivate the students to only use English in the classroom when using the language they already all know is so much faster and easier, but you will generally run into the same language problems between all the students. Since they may all come from the same or similar cultures, it will be much easier to find topics that interest the class as a whole, as well.
