I've learned that course books are not always the best way to go. Students need variety, material that keeps the interested and motivated on a constant basis. They desire challenges, and not the same old boring step-by-step layout of course books. Students can learn more through a combination of authentic materials (programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films and videos) as well as created materials (crosswords, puzzles, role-play cards, flash cards, gap fill activities, picture stories) and coursebook as it variety intrigues more interest and self-drive. A coursebook should never be used as the whole lesson! There must be supplementary items that motivate students. Course books don't always meet the needs of all the students, that's why supplementary items are necessary.
