In the last Unit of the course we looked at some of the most common problem situations that might occur in the class.
New classes are very important for the teacher because it is the time when he/she can establish rapport with the students and set the tone for the rest of the course. These classes can start in already existing group or in a newly formed group. On the first lesson the teacher should concentrate on building rapport within the class members, estimate their language ability and find out their needs. There are several ways for the teacher to do that including using questionnaire, talking game or needs analysis.
It is better to begin the class from the warmer activity. It helps to inspire, motivate students for using English and participate in the class. The warmers should be short, fun and linked to the Study phase of the lesson.
When the students are at varying levels in a group it is one of the biggest problems for the teacher. It can't be prevented completely even after running entrance level tests. To cope with this situation the teacher has a number of steps such as using different materials for the strong and weak students or giving different tasks while using the same material or pair stronger students with the weaker ones.
Most teachers at some time in their careers find themselves dealing with large groups of students. That makes a difficult job even more complicated. However, despite such problems the teacher can employ some techniques to make the issue a great deal easier and create successful classes. To do that he/she can use worksheets, pair/group work, choral repetition, appoint group leaders.
If there are reluctant students in the class who don't seem to want to talk or participate in class activities much, the teacher should understand the reasons for that and find the ways of encouraging these students to speak and engage in the class.
