There are a few problem situations that a teacher is likely to face at some point in their career so it is the wise teacher that is aware of possible problems that might arise and is also knowledgeable of the methods used to avoid, and if necessary, avert any such situations.
First lessons need to be treated slightly differently to the following lessons especially where the students are new and do not know one another. In this case a warmer activity is useful to establish report between the student themselves and between the student and teacher. The first lesson will also include further activities that allow the teacher too find out more about their students interests and aspirations. This will be of use in planning further class activities that focus lessons to the students interests.
Problems could arise from different levels within the same class. There are a few ways to deal with this and each way can be used when needed;
1 Use different materials for the different levels
2 use the same materials but assign different task levels.
3 Allow students to find their own level
4 Pair stronger and weaker students
Larger classes can be tackled:
1 by using worksheets rather than full class teaching
2 pair/group work
3 Ensure audibility when using the board and speaking
4 Choral repetition
5. Appoint group leaders to help with hand outs etc
6. Allow the humour and dynamics of the large group to flourish
Reluctant students can be encouraged with
1. a non-threatening atmosphere and
2. Pair work
3. Controlled Practice
4. Role play
5. Tape recording
