This unit reviews three important grammar elements: modal verbs, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express necessity or possibility. English modal verbs include must, shall, will, should, would, can, could, may, and might. Phrasal verbs are idiomatic phrases consisting of a verb and another element, typically either an adverb, or a preposition, or a combination of both. A passive construction occurs when you make the object of an action into the subject of a sentence. That is, whoever or whatever is performing the action is not the grammatical subject of the sentence.
