In this unit, we went over the advantages and disadvantages of using course books and alternative or additional options for lesson materials. Course books would definitely be useful for structure and encouraging language progression, but I've seen from personal and second-hand experience how this can become tedious and boring to the students after too long. They know what to expect out of their lessons and become lazy or give up trying. Therefore, some extra materials should be considered for classroom use in order to keep things both interesting and relevant. Using authentic materials such as newspapers, pamphlets, and menus would give the student an idea of what real-world written English looks like and how it's arranged, but it may not be suitable for lower level ESL students. Created materials may be easier to produce for multiple levels, but would most certainly require more work on the teacher's part. Certainly, a mix of coursebooks, authentic materials, and created materials seems to be the more effective course of action, as this would allow the teacher and the students the flexibility needed to cater to the students' needs without putting unnecessary strain on the teacher.
