Unit 15 discussed the testing and evaluation of ESL students. Formal means of feedback are common and usually necessary for most English learners. Feedback can be conducted in the form of tutorials, evaluation via the students, and tests. These tests can include placement and diagnostic tests, which take place prior to the commencement of a course. There are also progress tests which are used to periodically evaluate what information has been absorbed, and what areas need further attention. Finally, the unit covered practice tests and external examinations. The motivation of many students may encompass an external exam or certificate in order to apply for further education, career prospects, or general life skills in an English-speaking country.
