Unit 19 focuses on teaching special groups, notably beginners, young learners, individual students and business English clients. Each category of learners has specific needs and requires specific skills from the teacher. Teaching beginners requires a certain methodology as the real challenge is to keep them motivated throughout the course. The difficulty in teaching children however is to keep them interested in the lesson as they have a shorter attention span. Therefore each phase of the lesson needs to be concise, clear and interesting. Another special group is individual students ; there are many advantages to teaching them: since it is a one-to-one lesson all the focus is on one student and they are usually highly motivated to learn.
Business English is a very interesting special group as it allows the teacher to discover a different approach than the classic one. This unit also provides a sample "Needs Analysis" that includes questions in order to understand the needs and interests of the clients relating to their work. It was very interesting to learn about all the different groups of students, as they each require a different methodology and technique in teaching in order for them to learn to their fullest potential.
