How to Pronounce 'CATEGORICAL' - English Pronunciation

In this episode, we cover the pronunciation of the word categorical. This word is used as an adjective and means explicit and direct. It comes from the Greek word kat?goria meaning ‘statement’.

Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching. This convenient, highly structured design means that you can quickly get to grips with each section before moving onto the next.

This unit was about how to teach the receptive skills, which are reading and listenin.
An integrated lesson will include both the receptive skills and also both of the productive skills (writing and speaking), but often the teacher will want to focus on one type of skill set for a lesson specificall.
Broadly speaking, there are two categories of motives and reasons that people will be reading or listening and they are for a purpose or a goal, or for entertainment purpose.
Often, these two motives can also be mixe.
It is important that the students are able to infer meaning based on context and their pre-existing knowledge of the languag.
Being able to understand using reading and listening skills will depend on a number of specialist skills such as predictive skills, retrieving specific information (scanning), forming a general idea (skimming), gathering detailed information, and deduction from contex.
The language can present a few problems to English learners while reading or listenin.
Generally speaking, reading is easier because they can continually refer to a text and it doesn't go away, while with listening, they can only hear it once and they must understand it then and ther.
There are a number of ways to help students with the receptive skills in a lesson and to overcome any difficulties they might hav.
Pre-teaching difficult vocabulary that is essential to understanding the text or audio excerpt is extremely importan.
However, it is also important that students learn to read texts or listen to audio where they do not know every single word, so striking a balance between teaching too much and too little vocabulary before the activity is importan.
As a teacher, it is also important to select texts carefully so that students get language in a variety of contexts and can emphasize what they already know, while also learning some new thing.
The tasks should promote understanding, not just check it, and should present a challenge that is also achievabl.
Creating interest and picking the right topics to interest your students will get them motivated and more excited to do the reading and the tasks as wel.
A variety of topics to cater to all of your students is important, as is knowing your students personally and what they lik.
Using 'Engage' techniques, discussions, and visuals can also help to stimulate interes.
