This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I feel like this course really opened my eyes to a lot about the english language and teaching in general. As a native english speaker, I think I take for granted a lot of grammar that I learned as a child. It was really interesting to actually learn the rules and structures behind the grammar that I use instinctually without much thought. With regards to teaching, I have spent many years in a classroom and have taken a variety of language course, some much better than others. It was really good to focus on the ESA teaching technique as a structure for classes. I now realize that there is a great balance between passing on knowledge and keeping the class interested, engaged, and wanting to learn more. It is this balance that really influences the students’ attitude towards class. I remember different classes I have attended and the way professors taught. I never was too impressed or interested in the lecturing professor and always much more enjoyed the classes that I was able to actively participate in and had a more relaxed, less intimidating atmosphere.
With that said, I think my focus as a teacher will be to structure classes in a way that maximizes the students’ participation. I would want to be involved and keep the structure and direction of the class in mind, but I would also want to create an environment where students are not afraid to make mistakes or volunteer themselves, look forward to class and take away valuable learning as a byproduct of having a good time. I would always remain as approachable as possible and try to establish a positive rapport with each and every student. Finally, it will be my goal as a teacher to put my absolute effort into each class, to prepare thoroughly, and to come with a positive and engaging energy each and every day.
