This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I have gained a lot from this course. My college degree is completely unrelated to english or teaching. So by taking this course, I have been able to review a lot of valuable information I haven’t seen in over 6 years. Also I have learn a lot of new information too.
I think it should be a requirement to take a course similar to this before teaching ESL. The grammar points are crucial, the tips for games in class are nice, and the methodology for creating lesson plans work well. Last, I think the most useful part is that I can look back at 20 pdf documents that I am familiar with and be able to review whenever I want. Before now, I just have to haphazardly find information on the internet. A lot of the time different sources would contradict each other.
I cannot put as much into practice as I would like. The academy I work at really likes us to use the book and not stray much from. My director makes us give the students a quiz/test to start the class and then check homework. This is then followed by a set number of pages in the book we must cover. I have been able to utilize some of the grammar points I learned. By having a better understanding of grammar, it is easier to explain to students why they have to use simple forms of the verb versus perfect tense, or perfect continuous. Also, my boss isn’t a big fan of group work because he likes the students to be focused on the teacher for most of the lesson. This course gave me the confidence to begin assigning more group work. Moreover, my boss banned word games… But this course showed me some games that aren’t on his direct list of banned games. So I have started to do a few more games in class such as miming.
