This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I am not a native english speaker, even though english has been my working language for many years. I learned a lot on grammar and I pay much more attention to the way I speak and write than before. I would say it’s a more unconscious process but there is definitely a big difference. It is always good to know why certain words or phrases are written the way they are, one knows how it’s written but not necessarily why.
The second part of knowledge I gained was on teaching techniques; TEFL has a whole different approach to teaching than what I am used to in belgium. We were thought things the old fashioned way: grammar, vocabulary, exercise’s and study. Language classes were never fun, we has rarely activities in groups. By doing this course, I got to understand that language can be thought in a fun way and at the same time be very productive.
Previously I did some voluntary teaching, mainly based on the course book of the students and the materials provided by the school, following this course gave me many ideas on how to teach things better in a more efficient way for the students and less bring for the teachers as well.
Overall I found the course very useful, well structured, covered the main areas for teaching english, even though more in depth studying would be required if you want to teach to a higher level of students. The students will come up with more complex questions and will need more detailed answers. But I suppose you learn as you move forward.
The things I’ve learned can be applied to all areas of life, how to explain concepts in an effective way, how to keep the attention of a group of people (young ones or adults), how to write better, how to speak better, which words to choose,.. The teaching techniques can be applied to any language you are teaching.
In the future I would like to teach english while travelling. I’ve always had a great passion for travelling. Previously I worked more in a business environment but, it’s time to start something new, somewhere else. I love interaction with people from different countries and different cultures, and I believe the combination of my previous and new acquired skills can be an asset in the teaching business.
Thank you for the course, also a big thank you to my teacher Darren.
