After many years in my current employment, I have enjoyed being once again in the learning/studying process. My biggest reward from the program was making a new friend. At the request of one of the EAL instructors at the local college, I volunteered for 3 months with an EAL student. As noted in Unit 19, working informally one-on-one can result in building a close relationship and indeed that is what happened. We will continue to keep in touch.
In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of immigrants and refugees to our province. Eventually, I hope to secure a teaching position that would allow me to work with these people. Meanwhile, as a result of the positive volunteer tutoring experience, I will most likely volunteer with more female students.
